A SpaceX rocket that spent about a year drifting off course is believed to have struck the moon on Wednesday, according to scientists. The rocket had launched two lunar landers from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in January 2025 before its upper stage became a piece of space debris. Astronomers did not see the impact directly, but a telescope in Chile detected a plume of debris that matched the expected crash. Experts said the rocket was on a path toward the moon after tracking data showed it heading for a collision near Einstein Crater on the lunar surface. The incident adds to concerns about lunar litter as more countries and companies increase missions to the moon. SpaceX said it is working with NASA to help avoid similar accidents in the future. Scientists said final confirmation should come when NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter passes over the area and sends back images of the crater.
