A Squamish, B.C., man is describing how he survived five nights in the Coast Mountains after getting lost on a hike near the SeatoSky Gondola south of Squamish. Stanislav Volo, 43, said his phone died at the top of Mount Habrich and he was unable to find his way down. After hearing what he thought was the highway, he began descending in the wrong direction and later slipped, injuring his heel and wrist. He spent several days sheltering in a small cave near a waterfall, trying to stay warm and eating gummy bears and wildflowers. He said he eventually decided to climb down the mountain, where he reached a river and then a road before meeting a construction worker who alerted search crews. Search and rescue teams found Volo on Friday after a large operation in difficult terrain. Now recovering with his family, he says he is grateful to the rescuers and hopes others can learn from his experience.
