BC Hydro says electricity use in British Columbia is expected to reach historic spring levels as warm weather arrives and FIFA World Cup activity adds to demand.
The utility said consumption could approach the province’s alltime summer peak of 8,652 megawatts, recorded in August. It expects usage to rise on Friday as temperatures climb, and to increase further around Saturday’s World Cup match in Vancouver between Australia and Turkey.
BC Hydro also said demand could peak at about 8,500 megawatts on Monday. It noted that hotterthanexpected weather and World Cup watch parties could push usage above its forecasts, but said it is prepared for the spike. The company added that some maintenance work in the Vancouver area may be limited through July 19 because of equipment serving FIFA venues, transit, and airport facilities.
