Maine Democrats are moving quickly to pick a new Senate nominee after Graham Platner dropped out of the race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Eight Democrats have filed so far, and the state party will choose a nominee through a delegate vote at a convention in Bangor on July 25. County meetings this weekend will select those delegates ahead of the deadline to replace Platner on the ballot.
The field includes former Maine public health official Nirav Shah, former state Senate President Troy Jackson, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former congressional staffer Jordan Wood, former state environment official David Costello, beer company cofounder Dan Kleban, social worker Paige Loud, and former state representative Elizabeth Dickerson. Party leaders are also trying to keep the coalition that supported Platner united, as grassroots volunteers say their support depends on progressive commitments.
