Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei pushes independent AI oversight
AI safety oversight gets a push as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei backs watchdogs Independent evaluators could verify frontier models, incidents, and training practices
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is calling for outside watchdogs to play a larger role in overseeing frontier AI development. In a recent letter, he said independent evaluators could help verify safety practices, review incidents, and assess both finished models and training processes.
Amodei pointed to METR, an AI safety testing lab, as an example of the kind of thirdparty oversight he thinks the industry needs. The article notes that METR and several of its leaders have ties to the effective altruism movement, which has also influenced parts of the wider AI safety community.
The report traces Amodei’s background through OpenAI, Google Brain, Baidu, and later Anthropic, where safety became a core part of the company’s mission. It also highlights past tensions between Anthropic and government or commercial pressures, including disagreements over military and surveillancerelated uses of AI. Amodei said AI can still improve people’s lives, but only if companies build it with stronger safeguards and more accountability.
