Canada defeated Qatar 60 at B.C. Place in Vancouver on June 18, earning its firstever men’s World Cup victory and moving to the top of Group B.
Jonathan David scored three goals, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba and an own goal by Qatar completed the scoring. The result was the largest win by a CONCACAF team in men’s World Cup history.
The match was overshadowed by a serious secondhalf leg injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné, who was stretchered off the field. Canada will next play Switzerland on June 24 as it seeks to advance from the group stage for the first time.
