Sophie Faucher, acclaimed Quebec actor, dies at 68

Sophie Faucher, a celebrated Quebec actor, writer and playwright, has died at the age of 68. Her death was announced Tuesday, and colleagues and public figures across the province paid tribute to her long career in theatre, television and film. Faucher worked in Quebec’s cultural scene for more than 50 years. She was known for roles in television series such as Le coeur a ses raisons, Indéfendable, Montréal P.Q. and Virginie, as well as for her film work and extensive voicedubbing career. She also became closely associated with Frida Kahlo through plays, books and other projects she created or cowrote. Born into an artistic family, Faucher began performing as a child and later graduated from Montreal’s Conservatoire d'art dramatique in 1978. In recent years, she had withdrawn from a stage production for health reasons. Quebec artists and political leaders described her as a major figure whose work left a lasting mark on the province’s cultural life.
