Quebec town declares emergency after heavy rain

A municipality in Quebec’s Laurentians region has declared a local state of emergency after heavy rainfall damaged roads and affected access in the area.
L’Ascension said more than a dozen roads were damaged or destroyed after the rain. The town, which has about 900 residents, also reported landslides and sinkholes in social media posts shared by residents.
Officials are asking people to limit travel to essential trips and avoid the hardesthit areas. Environment Canada said as much as 75 millimetres of rain fell in the Upper Laurentians from Sunday into Monday, and the mayor of nearby SteAdèle has offered assistance if needed.
