B.C. review board finds suspect in RCMP killing unfit for trial

A British Columbia review board has ruled that Jongwon Ham, who is accused of firstdegree murder in the 2022 death of RCMP Const. Shaelyn Yang, is unfit for trial and must remain in custody. The decision took effect on July 16 and means Ham will stay at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam for at least one year before the case is reviewed again. Yang, who worked as a mental health and outreach worker for the RCMP, was fatally stabbed in Burnaby’s Broadview Park in October 2022 while attempting to speak with a man living in a tent. The ruling followed a public assessment last week after a B.C. Supreme Court judge earlier found Ham unfit to stand trial and referred the matter to the province’s review board, which oversees the mental health status of criminally accused people.
