Zcash holders approve 25-second blocks and keep halving schedule

Zcash block time cut to 25 seconds with halvings intact for faster confirmations. See how NU7 could speed up ZEC transfers while keeping issuance steady.

Zcash holders have voted to shorten the network’s target block time to 25 seconds from 75 seconds while keeping the existing halving schedule in place. According to the poll results, nearly all participating ZECweighted votes supported the faster block proposal and preserving halvings. The changes are intended for NU7, a planned network upgrade that has not yet been assigned an activation date. The proposal would reduce the time users typically wait for a first transaction confirmation. To keep daily issuance unchanged, the amount of new ZEC created per block would be lowered to match the faster cadence. Holders also backed delaying the Network Sustainability Mechanism, another proposed change to Zcash’s monetary model, until February 2031. Developers still plan to finalize upgrade items by the Sept. 30 cutoff, with testnet and mainnet activation dates yet to be decided.
