Former Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour will be sworn in as Canada’s next governor general on June 8, replacing Mary Simon. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Arbour for the post on Tuesday. He described her as a strong defender of Canada’s constitutional order and said she would represent the country at home and abroad. Arbour, 79, has held major legal and human rights roles in Canada and internationally, including chief prosecutor for UN tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and CEO of the International Crisis Group. She said she accepted the role with a deep sense of duty.
