Parents push for crossing guard near Montreal West school
Royal West Academy crossing guard demand grows after student safety concerns Parents urge a return to Westminster and Ainslie until road redesign is done
Parents and school officials at Royal West Academy in Montreal West are calling for a crossing guard to return to Westminster Avenue and Ainslie Road as students head back to class.
The intersection has been a concern after several students were hit by cars in recent years, including one in October 2024 and two others in February 2026 who were sent to hospital with minor injuries. A temporary crossing guard was assigned in the spring, but the arrangement ended at the close of the school year.
Planned road changes meant to improve safety were delayed by strikerelated disruptions at a nearby railway crossing. Parents now want the guard back until the redesign is finished, and some say the protection should remain permanently because the area stays busy and difficult to cross.
