Bear attack near Whistler leaves hiker injured on backcountry trail Officials closed the area after a helicopter rescue and bear investigation

A woman was taken to hospital after a bear attacked her while she was hiking in the backcountry near Whistler, British Columbia, on Friday evening. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service said three hikers came across two bears near Conflict Lake in Callaghan Conservancy around 5 p.m. One of the bears attacked the woman before leaving the area. Conservation officers, Squamish RCMP, and Squamish Search and Rescue responded by helicopter. The woman received first aid at the scene and was later airlifted to hospital with nonlifethreatening injuries. Officials said an adult male black bear found at the site was killed for safety reasons. They have not yet determined whether a black bear or grizzly bear was responsible. Trail access in the area is closed while the investigation continues.
