Trump Questions Renewal of Canada-U.S.-Mexico Trade Deal

His remarks came while U.S. trade officials were already in talks with Canada and Mexico about the agreement's future. Trump said the deal included a termination option that he considers important, and repeated his view that the United States does not need trade ties with Canada or Mexico. The agreement does not expire until 2036, but any member country can withdraw with six months' notice. Canada and Mexico have said they want the deal extended, while also being open to changes. The agreement is important to Canada because it supports roughly 90 per cent of exports to the U.S. and covers about $1.3 trillion in crossborder trade. U.S. agriculture groups and lawmakers have also called for renewal, warning that scrapping the deal could create uncertainty.
