LaSalle College to reopen after judge renews creditor protection

LaSalle College Montreal reopening after court restores funding and extends protection Relief for students as the school seeks a payment plan before the Sept. 24 deadline

LaSalle College in Montreal will reopen Friday after a Quebec Superior Court judge renewed its creditor protection and ordered provincial funding to be restored, giving the school more time to work out a payment plan with the government. The decision comes as the college faces nearly $30 million in fines tied to Quebec’s 2022 language law, which limits enrollment in Englishlanguage college programs. The school also has to repay $17.9 million in subsidies, bringing its total debt to almost $48 million. Students, teachers and staff said the ruling brought relief after days of uncertainty. The judge said the province had not given the college a fair path to repay its debts and extended protection until Sept. 24, when both sides are expected to report on a possible agreement.
