Three men sentenced in Surrey extortion-related shooting case

Three men have pleaded guilty and been sentenced in connection with a shooting and fire outside a home in Surrey’s Crescent Beach neighbourhood on Feb. 1, according to police. Surrey police said Taranveer Singh received a fiveyear prison sentence for reckless discharge of a firearm, while Dayajeet Billing and Harjot Singh each pleaded guilty to throwing an explosive substance and received sentences of just over two years. Police said the case is among the first extortionrelated convictions in British Columbia. The men were arrested after trying to leave the scene in a rideshare vehicle. Surrey police said the sentences may help deter similar attacks. The Canada Border Services Agency will decide what happens after the men finish serving their time in Canada, while police continue to investigate extortionlinked incidents in the region.
