Crews have finished excavating the launch shaft for the Yonge North Subway Extension, a key step in the planned transit line north of Toronto.
The Ontario government said the work marks a major milestone for the eightkilometre project, which is expected to extend subway service from Finch Station through five new stations to High Tech Station, with a connection to the Richmond Hill GO line.
Officials said the completed shaft will allow tunnel boring machines to begin work later this year as utility relocations continue. The province says the project is intended to improve access to transit in Markham and Richmond Hill and help ease congestion in the region.
