Repentigny’s mayor is asking Canada’s transport minister to halt rail traffic through the Quebec city until CN Rail finishes repairs and safety measures following a recent derailment.
The request comes after the Transportation Safety Board said its early investigation into the July 5 incident found several track deficiencies, including missing or displaced rail anchors and skewed ties along part of the CN Joliette Subdivision.
CN says the derailment was likely linked to thermal misalignment caused by extreme heat, and Transport Canada says trains in the area are now restricted to 10 mph while inspections and reviews continue. The TSB says its investigation is still underway and may lead to additional safety recommendations.
