Ukraine launches major drone strike on Russia during election period
Ukraine drone strikes hit Russia in a major escalation, damaging key sites See how the attacks unfolded and what Zelenskyy is demanding next
Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones and missiles at targets in Russia, in what Moscow described as its largest such attack of the war. Russian officials said the strikes killed two people, wounded others, and damaged infrastructure in the Moscow area, including an oil refinery and a residential building.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks were aimed at sites supporting Russia’s war effort and called for tougher sanctions from the United States, Europe, and the G7. He said Ukraine was responding to repeated Russian drone, missile, and bomb attacks.
The strikes came on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, which were also being held in areas of Ukraine occupied or claimed by Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of trying to interfere with the vote, while Ukrainian officials also reported new Russian attacks that killed civilians in Ukraine.
