Metal thefts hit BC Hydro EV charging stations

BC Hydro EV charging stations in Port Moody were damaged early Tuesday morning after thieves cut copper cables from six fast chargers at the Port Moody Recreation Centre. Police said sensors alerted staff to the theft in progress, but officers found no suspects at the scene. BC Hydro said the copper inside the fastcharging cables makes the stations a target because the metal can be sold for a relatively small amount of money, while the damage disrupts service for drivers. The utility said it has recorded 44 fast charger cable thefts at 22 sites across B.C. since October, with repair costs reaching about $1 million. BC Hydro is adding cameras, lighting, and protective cable shields, while police are reviewing surveillance video and asking the public for information.
