Quebec has reached a new agreement with the province’s Englishlanguage universities to increase the share of outofprovince undergraduates who can hold basic conversations in French by graduation.
The province said it will provide about $20 million a year for the next eight years to support the effort at McGill, Concordia and Bishop’s University. Officials said the goal is for about 60% of outofprovince students in those programs to reach that level of French proficiency.
University leaders said the target is higher than current levels, but they believe it can be met. The funding will be used for French courses, immersion activities and other learning opportunities, while Quebec says the initiative is meant to protect and promote French in the province.
