Sens open post-Tkachuk era with win over Leafs

Senators open season with 3-2 win over Maple Leafs as Chabot stars Ullmark stops 27, Halliday nets winner, and Ottawa begins post-Tkachuk era

Ottawa opened its first game of the NHL season with a 32 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Thomas Chabot led the Senators with a goal and an assist in his first game as captain, while goaltender Linus Ullmark made 27 saves. The game marked Ottawa’s first since Brady Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers in June after requesting a move. The Senators handled a late Toronto push and scored the goahead goal midway through the third period when Stephen Halliday finished a loose puck on the power play. Ottawa’s win came with a setback, however, as defenseman Jake Sanderson left in the first period after aggravating a lowerbody injury. Coach Travis Green said more would be known in the coming days. The Leafs were unable to force a tying goal despite chances from their top scorers.
