Ontario police lay more than 2,400 charges in street racing crackdown

Ontario police agencies have concluded a road safety campaign that resulted in more than 2,400 charges related to street racing and dangerous driving. The 2026 Project Erase operation involved the Ontario Provincial Police and several regional and municipal forces, including Durham, York, Peel, Waterloo, Halton and Hamilton. Officers said the effort was designed to reduce risky driving and improve safety on provincial roads. Police said the campaign led to 2,438 Highway Traffic Act charges and 118 Criminal Code charges. They also pointed to the broader toll of speeding and reckless driving, citing OPP data that says excessive speed contributed to 75 road deaths last year. Officials in Peel Region and Toronto said they issued many of the charges during the campaign and stressed that drivers can also face vehicle seizures and licence suspensions. Police urged witnesses to report dangerous driving, saying community reporting can help prevent crashes and deaths.
