Quebec has stopped charging provincial sales tax on certain food and hygiene products as of Wednesday, following a policy announced by Premier Christine Fréchette in May.
The measure applies to items such as some singleserving ice cream products, baked goods, prepared fruit and vegetable trays, certain salted or seasoned nuts and seeds, as well as toilet paper and tissues. The province says the change should save the average household about $50 per year.
The policy has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters say it could help people buying smaller portions or readytoeat foods, while some economists argue the savings may be limited for many shoppers. Retailers say they are prepared for the change, though smaller stores may need time to adjust billing systems.
