The Democratic Party of Korea has decided to pursue the introduction of a special counsel as a party policy to uncover the truth behind the shortage of ballots that surfaced during the June 3 local elections.
At the National Assembly caucus meeting on the 29th, Democratic Party Acting Leader and Floor Leader Han Byungdo pointed out that the basic task of election management—preparing ballots—had not been properly carried out, shaking confidence in the election. He said that, following a parliamentary inquiry, an independent special counsel investigation is needed to determine whether there was negligence of duty, false reporting, or evasion of responsibility.
The Democratic Party unanimously adopted a resolution at the caucus meeting to push ahead with the related special counsel. The People Power Party welcomed the move, but argued that a special counsel recommended by the opposition party must be appointed in order to uncover the truth without political considerations.
