On the 10th, Rep. Jeong Jeomsik was elected as the new floor leader of the People Power Party. In the runoff vote at the lawmakers' general meeting held at the National Assembly, Rep. Jeong beat Rep. Kim Doeup by a margin of seven votes.
Rep. Jeong won 55 of the 103 votes, and in the first round of voting, Rep. Jeong received 47 votes, Rep. Kim 39, and Rep. Sung Iljong 20. Rep. Jeong is a former public prosecutor and is known to be an alum of Seoul National University School of Law with former President Yoon Suk Yeol, as well as a fellow classmate at the Judicial Research and Training Institute.
In his remarks after being elected, the new floor leader Jeong emphasized unity and said there should be no factionalism or division. However, among nonfactional members within the party, there was also criticism that he was leaning more toward stability than reform. The new floor leader Jeong's first task is negotiations over the formation of the National Assembly and normalizing the standing committee structure.
