The KOSPI briefly topped the 9,300 level intraday on the 19th, rewriting its alltime high, but gave back most of its gains in the afternoon and closed in the low 9,000 range.
The index opened up 2.48% at 9,288.89 and at one point rose to 9,385.59, but later turned lower and slid to as low as 8,831.72 during the session. It eventually closed at 9,052.42, down 0.13% from the previous trading day.
The semiconductor sector led the market, but analysts said profittaking and concerns over concentration in specific sectors deepened the losses. Individual investors were net buyers of 1.6866 trillion won, while foreigners and institutions were net sellers. The KOSDAQ also closed lower, at 966.59.
