The Democratic Party of Korea has introduced, as a party line, a resolution condemning the landmine explosion incident that occurred in the DMZ on the western front. Although the ruling and opposition parties discussed adopting it jointly, they failed to reach an agreement, leading to a unilateral proposal by the ruling party.
On the 2nd, 161 Democratic Party lawmakers, including National Assembly National Defense Committee Chair Jin Sungjoon, submitted the ‘Resolution Condemning the North Korean Landmine Explosion Incident in the Area South of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).’ The resolution includes demands that North Korea acknowledge responsibility and apologize, punish those responsible, and come up with measures to prevent a recurrence.
It also includes a call for the government to inform the international community of North Korea’s military provocations through cooperation with the UN and related countries, and to prepare support measures for veterans’ benefits and medical care for injured service members and their families. Earlier, the National Defense Committee had discussed adopting a resolution condemning North Korea, but the agreement fell through after the People Power Party requested a review of humanitarian aid to North Korea.
