The World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization signed an agreement to promote AI governance and inclusive cooperation 29 founding member countries jointly build a new platform to help developing countries share AI opportunities
According to a Xinhua News Agency report on July 19, the Agreement on the Establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization was signed in Shanghai on July 16. Twentynine countries from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe signed the agreement onsite and became founding member states. The Chinese side said this marks phased progress in advancing the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, and the next step will be to work with the founding member states to promote the organization’s early launch and operation.
According to the report, the cooperation organization will focus on three key tasks in the future: first, strengthening international cooperation on AI capacity building, and through policy exchanges, technological cooperation, training, and joint research, improving access to technology and services so that more developing countries can share in development opportunities; second, leveraging its role as a platform for communication, dialogue, and matching supply with demand, promoting resource complementarity and practical cooperation, advancing the "AI+" initiative in light of each country’s circumstances, and encouraging the joint development of an opensource ecosystem; third, supporting the United Nations’ role in AI governance, implementing the Global Digital Compact and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and promoting the establishment of a fairer and more reasonable global governance system.
The report said the agreement has made arrangements for the organization’s purpose, principles, functions, structure, and decisionmaking procedures, laying the foundation for its subsequent formal establishment and operation.
