Brazilian Composer Lenski Talks About His Nanjing Creative Experience
Brazilian composer Alexander Lenski's "GAM" premieres, Nanjing life inspires creative inspiration Incorporating pentatonic scales and elements of China-Brazil exchange, exploring the musical resonance brought by this city
Brazilian composer Alexander Lenski recently said in an interview that his experience living and working in Nanjing became an important source of inspiration for his new composition, "GAM." The piece had its world premiere at a percussion concert held for "Confucius Institute Day" at São Paulo State University in Brazil.
Lenski studied and worked in New York, USA, before returning to Brazil to teach. From 2023 to 2025, he was a visiting professor at Nanjing University of the Arts. He said that the crowds in Nanjing's street squares, the rhythm of urban life, and the convenient public transportation all made him feel that the relationship between the city and its people is very harmonious.
According to reports, the musical material of "GAM" incorporates elements similar to the Chinese pentatonic scale, and also echoes his life experiences in China. At the concert that day, in addition to this new work, pieces such as "Horse Racing" and "Clouds of Yunnan" were also performed, along with other Chinese and foreign works. The organizers said that such performances have become a platform for exchange among Chinese and Brazilian composers and for showcasing original works.
