The Echo of the "Half a Radio": Qijiang's Red Communications Spirit Continues to This Day

As July 1st approaches, the replica of the “halfradio” in the Wang Liang Comrade Memorial Hall in Qijiang, Chongqing, has attracted many visitors. This radio, which could only receive signals and not transmit them, originated from equipment captured by the Red Army in 1930, and is also regarded as an important starting point of China’s red telecommunications industry. The article reviews this history and notes that Qijiang had a weak communications foundation in those days, but now has built a relatively complete 5G and gigabit fiberoptic network. Through network coverage, smart community upgrades, and the construction of cloud data centers, the local area has extended its communications capability into urban governance, public services, and industrial development.
