Oh Se-hoon sentenced to a fine of 10 million won in the first trial

Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon was sentenced in the first trial to a fine of 10 million won and an additional collection of 21 million won on charges of requesting opinion polls from Mr. Myeong Taegyun and having a sponsor pay the costs on his behalf. The court found part of the poll expenses paid on his behalf to be guilty, and if the ruling is finalized, Mayor Oh will lose his position and be unable to run for office for five years. The Criminal Division 22 of the Seoul Central District Court handed down its ruling on the 22nd for Mayor Oh, former Vice Mayor for Political Affairs Kang Cheolwon, and sponsor Kim Hanjeong, who were indicted on charges including violations of the Political Funds Act. The court found that there were circumstances indicating that Mayor Oh called Mr. Myeong to request opinion polls and discussed nonpublic surveys and election strategy. The court determined that 21 million won in payments on behalf of others, corresponding to 5 of the 10 total surveys, was guilty, and did not recognize the remaining portion. Immediately after the sentencing, Mayor Oh said he would appeal.
