Chinese mathematicians win the Fields Medal in the same class for the first time

On July 23 local time, the International Congress of Mathematicians opened in Philadelphia, USA, and the Fields Medal was announced. Chinese young mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu won the award at the same time. This is the first time Chinese mathematicians have won the Fields Medal, and it is also the first time that two Chinese mathematicians have won the award simultaneously at the same Congress. Several mathematicians interviewed said that this result marks an important breakthrough in the development of mathematics in China and also shows that Chinese mathematicians are now able to make original contributions at the forefront of international mathematics. Wang Hong and Deng Yu have respectively achieved internationally recognized results in areas such as harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, and partial differential equations.
