China Earthquake Administration Conducts Rapid Assessment Consultation on Earthquake Disasters in Venezuela and Japan
Rapid earthquake assessment: The Chinese side conducts analysis of the major earthquakes in Venezuela and Japan, supporting emergency response Jointly with multiple institutions, risk maps are drawn to assist in disaster tracking, loss assessment, and decision-making services
The China Earthquake Administration reported on June 27 that after strong earthquakes struck Venezuela and Japan in succession, the Institute of Engineering Mechanics and other units quickly organized rapid assessments and, together with several scientific research institutions and expert teams, conducted consultations and analysis.
This effort focused on the source parameters, tectonic setting, impact range, population and building data, vulnerability of disasterbearing bodies, and historical earthquake damage experience of the two earthquakes. It preliminarily analyzed casualties, building damage, economic losses, and social impacts, and provided technical support for postearthquake emergency response.
In particular, for the magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Venezuela, the relevant teams also completed a liquefaction risk distribution map, a peak ground acceleration distribution map, and an instrumental seismic intensity distribution map. The China Earthquake Administration said that in the next step it will continue to track developments in the disaster situation, improve the rapid assessment and emergency scienceandtechnology support mechanism for overseas earthquake disasters, and enhance rapid judgment and decisionmaking service capabilities.
