Police disciplinary cases, including drunk driving and sexual misconduct, have reached 2,814 officers. Take a look at the status of severe disciplinary action and measures to strengthen internal police controls.

According to data from the National Police Agency, from 2021 through the first half of this year, 2,814 police officers were disciplined for violations such as maintaining dignity, duty of diligence, and the duty to keep secrets. About 500 officers received disciplinary action each year, and this year alone, 300 were included in the first half. Among the reasons for discipline, violations of maintaining dignity, which include drunk driving, traffic accidents, sexual misconduct, gambling, and fraud, were the most common. This was followed by violations of the duty of diligence, violations of the duty of integrity, and violations of the duty to keep secrets. By rank, inspectors and senior inspectors accounted for 1,678 people, or 59.6% of the total, making them the largest group. As for the level of discipline, reprimand was the most common, but severe disciplinary actions such as suspension, demotion, dismissal, and removal were also substantial, and the police are pushing ahead with excluding senior officials involved in serious misconduct from key positions and strengthening the system for responding to investigative misconduct to enhance internal controls.
