The Democratic Party of Korea strongly criticized Chief Justice Cho Heedae of the Supreme Court on the 22nd for rejecting President Lee Jaemyung's request to renominate Supreme Court justice candidates, calling for his resignation and even raising the possibility of impeachment.
The Blue House also criticized Chief Justice Cho's statement, saying it ran counter to the spirit of the Constitution. In particular, it raised concerns that there was political intent behind issuing the statement while the president was on an overseas trip.
The Democratic Party held an emergency meeting of its lawmakers and staged a rally condemning Chief Justice Cho. The leadership said it would monitor the response rather than immediately push ahead with an impeachment motion, but members of the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee said they would put Chief Justice Cho on the witness stand at the October National Audit.
