Construction Begins on the Three Gorges New Waterway, Bringing Yichang New Opportunities for Development

The Three Gorges waterway new channel project officially started on June 8, bringing a new round of urban development opportunities to Yichang, Hubei. The project includes the new channel at the Three Gorges Hub and the capacity expansion of the Gezhouba Navigation Complex, aiming to improve the navigability of the Yangtze River through the construction and reconstruction of ship locks, and further keep the Yangtze River’s golden waterway unobstructed. The article points out that Yichang has long developed alongside major national projects such as Gezhouba and the Three Gorges Hub, and its urban scale and infrastructure have undergone two rounds of expansion and quality improvement. As the new channel construction advances, Yichang is expected to shift from a transportation transit node to a more aggregationcapable hub city, further enhancing its role in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Experts believe that after the project is completed, the efficiency of shipping connections between Wuhan and Chongqing will improve, and Yichang’s functions in cargo collection and distribution, transshipment, and resource allocation will become more prominent. At the same time, improved navigational conditions and lower logistics costs may create new development space for local industries such as green manufacturing, smart logistics, and digital shipping.
