People Power Party's Lee Min-geun succeeds in winning a second term as Ansan mayor

The Ansan mayoral election shook up Ansan's political landscape with Lee Min-geun's successful reelection. Check out now the significance of the first incumbent mayor's reelection and comeback victory.

In the June 3 local elections, the race for Ansan mayor in Gyeonggi ended with the victory of People Power Party candidate Lee Mingeun. This is the first time an incumbent mayor in Ansan City has succeeded in winning a second term. According to the final vote count by the National Election Commission, Lee received 50.44% of the vote, narrowly edging out Democratic Party candidate Cheon Youngmi. Cheon led in the early stages of the count, but from dawn onward Lee narrowed the gap and secured his election victory in the morning. Ansan has long been regarded as a region where candidates affiliated with the Democratic Party have been strong. This result is being seen as a meaningful change in the local political landscape. In his remarks after winning, Lee emphasized unity and changes in citizens' lives.
