Son Heung-min falls behind Vela 5-11 in LAFC fan voting
The reason Son Heung-min trailed Vela in the LAFC fan vote was the large difference in symbolic significance. He also proved his presence with an assist from Bouanga... Check out the behind-the-scenes story of the vote.
Son Heungmin trailed in a fan vote comparing him with LAFC legend Carlos Vela. When Mexican sports media outlet TUDN asked 16 LAFC fans near the stadium who the club’s iconic figure was, Son Heungmin received only 5 votes, while Vela got 11.
Son Heungmin joined LAFC last summer after leaving Tottenham and is now in his second season with the club. Vela, on the other hand, is regarded as the club’s first star, having played for the team from 2018 to 2024 and contributed to major titles. Among fans, it was interpreted that Son Heungmin has not yet built up many achievements at LAFC, and Vela’s iconic status influenced the voting result.
According to the article, Son Heungmin and Vela have also shown mutual respect for each other. Son Heungmin previously described Vela as a legend and said he also wanted to stay with the team for a long time and have a similar standing. Meanwhile, Son Heungmin came on as a substitute in the San Diego match held on the same day, assisting Denis Bouanga’s goal and helping the team earn a 22 draw.
