President Lee Jaemyung publicly called on people on the 19th to stop excessive slander over the party leadership race and conflicts within the Democratic Party of Korea.
In a briefing at the Chunchugwan press room of the Blue House on the results of his Europe trip and attendance at the Group of Seven (G7) summit, President Lee pointed out that a situation in which intraparty competition appears almost like a war could make the public uncomfortable. He emphasized that insulting opponents or attacking them by making up baseless claims is not desirable, and said competition based on reasonable facts is necessary.
He also added that political debate, whether between the ruling and opposition parties or within a party, should be competition, not war, and that they should debate before the public over who is more reasonable and efficient. Regarding the recent downward trend in support for state affairs, President Lee said that the public's assessment must be taken seriously.
