The Chinese Embassy in Japan Makes Representations to Japan over Its Remarks on the "South China Sea Arbitration Award"
The South China Sea arbitration award has triggered representations between China and Japan, with the Chinese side emphasizing that it does not accept any claims based on the award. The Chinese Embassy in Japan solemnly protested Japan's statements regarding the South China Sea, saying it will firmly safeguard its lawful rights and interests.
On July 13, the Chinese Embassy in Japan stated that, regarding the Japanese Foreign Minister's remarks marking the 10th anniversary of the "South China Sea Arbitration Award" and the joint statement issued with other countries, it has made solemn representations and lodged strong protests with Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Chinese side pointed out that the socalled "award" lacks a basis in international law and undermines the authority of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and that China does not accept any claims or actions based on this "award." The Chinese side also emphasized that China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea are not affected by this "award."
The embassy said that Japan's continued interference in South China Sea issues and politicization of the related disputes are not conducive to regional peace and stability and run counter to the common interests of regional countries. China said it will firmly respond to such provocations and safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
