The firstinstance ruling in Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon's case over the alleged 'proxy payment of public opinion poll expenses' will be held at 2 p.m. on the 22nd. The Seoul Central District Court has decided to record and broadcast this sentencing hearing, and the video will be made public after the ruling is finished.
Mayor Oh was handed over to trial on charges of receiving public opinion poll results several times from political broker Myung Taegyun ahead of the 2021 Seoul mayoral byelection and having sponsor Kim Hanjeong pay the related expenses of 33 million won on his behalf. The special counsel requested a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison and a forfeiture of 33 million won at the closing hearing.
If the court finds him guilty and a fine of at least 1 million won is finalized for violating the Political Funds Act, Mayor Oh will lose his position as mayor. Sentencing for former Seoul Vice Mayor for Political Affairs Kang Cheolwon and Kim Hanjeong, who were also indicted in the same case, is also scheduled to be handed down together.
