Chen Liquan has stayed committed for fifty years to advancing the development of China's lithium batteries

Chen Liquan is a researcher at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and one of the key pioneers in China’s lithium battery field. According to CCTV News client, the 86yearold scientist has long taken national needs as the direction of his research. For decades, he has continuously devoted himself to basic research on lithium batteries, key materials, and the advancement of industrialization, making important contributions to China’s lithium batteries progressing from their early stage to becoming among the world’s leaders. The report reviews how, when he went to Germany for a visit and study in 1976, he came into contact with lithium nitride materials and then turned to research in solidstate ionics. After that, against the backdrop of limited domestic research conditions, he led his team in persistent efforts to overcome key challenges, successively developing China’s first solidstate lithium battery and liquid lithiumion battery, and promoting the establishment of a pilot production line that solved multiple technical problems in largescale production. With the rapid development of China’s new energy vehicle industry, lithium battery technology has continued to advance. Chen Liquan and his team later continued exploring areas such as nano siliconcarbon anode materials and solidstate batteries, striving to address new challenges such as energy density, safety, and resource constraints. The report says that this longterm perseverance and accumulation in basic research have become important reasons why China’s lithium battery technology has achieved breakthroughs and maintained international competitiveness.
