People Power Party’s top two leaders take diverging paths even on Constitution Day

People Power Party leader Jang Donghyeok and floor leader Jeong Jeomsik took different actions on the 17th, Constitution Day. Leader Jang skipped the National Assembly’s Constitution Day ceremony and visited Olympic Park in Songpagu, Seoul, where a rally for suffrage was being held, while floor leader Jeong attended the ceremony.
Leader Jang explained his absence from the event, criticizing the operation of the National Assembly and the ruling party’s method of forming the assembly, while floor leader Jeong attended, stressing the need to normalize the National Assembly. Afterwards, Jeong criticized the Democratic Party of Korea on social media, emphasizing the Constitution Day spirit of agreement between the ruling and opposition parties, as well as debate and negotiation.
When interpretations emerged that the two had been out of sync over their different actions, the People Power Party denied this. Senior spokesperson Park Seonghoon explained that this was a “twotrack” strategy in which the party leader and the floor leader each carry out different roles. However, within the party, subtle tensions continue as differences in the two men’s positions have recently been exposed.
