It was belatedly confirmed that about three months before the seawalk bridge Boritdolgyo in Guryongpoeup, Pohang, Gyeongbuk collapsed, a citizen had requested a safety inspection, saying a loud impact sound was heard from the bridge.
According to Pohang City, a citizen reported that while fishing on Boritdolgyo last April, they heard a 'bang' sound twice from the bridge. However, the city did not take measures such as a detailed safety inspection or restricting passage, and pedestrian traffic continued afterward.
On the afternoon of the 28th, Boritdolgyo collapsed as about 50 meters of the pier and deck caved in just before a pedestrian was about to cross. The pedestrian had turned back moments earlier, so there were no casualties. The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the collapse and whether there were problems with Pohang City's management and oversight.
