Election of National Assembly standing committee chairs: the Democratic Party secures 11 seats on its own and leads the formation of the Assembly leadership Amid protests from the People Power Party, the political fallout is growing, and whether they will boycott the National Assembly is also drawing attention
On the night of the 30th, the Democratic Party of Korea unilaterally elected chairpersons for 11 of the 18 standing committees at a plenary session of the National Assembly held without the People Power Party in attendance. Rep. Han Byungdo, the Democratic Party's floor leader, was elected chair of the Steering Committee, Rep. Seo Youngkyo as chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Lee Kwangjae as chair of the Budget and Accounts Committee.
The Speaker of the National Assembly proceeded with the plenary session after assigning lawmakers from the People Power Party to the 11 standing committees recommended by the Democratic Party, and People Power Party lawmakers strongly protested by submitting resignation letters from their standing committee posts. During the voting process, the People Power Party did not participate and left the plenary chamber.
The People Power Party criticized the procedure as a 'backroom decision' and said it would not accept any standing committee unless the normalization of the committee lineup is restored. It also plans to hold a party caucus on the 2nd of next month to discuss response measures, including whether to boycott the National Assembly.
