The juvenile horseshoe crab density in the China horseshoe crab national nature reserve in Hepu, Guangxi, hits a new high

On the 29th, the Guangxi Hepu Dugong National Nature Reserve announced that the latest observation results of the 2026 "AsiaPacific Horseshoe Crab Observation Network Plan" show that the density of juvenile Chinese horseshoe crabs at multiple monitoring sites in the reserve continues to rise. Among them, the maximum density of juvenile horseshoe crabs per sample plot at the freshwater mouth monitoring site in 2025 reached 73.44/100 square meters, a significant increase compared with 2024. The report noted that over the past year, the reserve has continued to advance coastal wetland remediation and restoration efforts, while strengthening sealand patrols, law enforcement inspections, and mudflat cleanups. It removed human disturbance factors such as aquaculture facilities, piles, fencing nets, and discarded tires, and also cleared away nearly 50 tons of marine debris, helping the wetlands gradually return to a natural state. The reserve said it will continue to carry out routine monitoring of juvenile Chinese horseshoe crab resources, track population changes and habitat conditions, provide data support for subsequent conservation management, and further promote biodiversity protection in coastal wetlands.
