Park Sung-jae Submits Appeal: Appeals after First-Trial 25-Year Prison Sentence for Participation in Illegal Martial Law Quickly check the court's key points of judgment and the reasons for the conviction of insurrection
Former Justice Minister Park Sungjae submitted an appeal after being sentenced to 25 years in prison in the first trial on charges of involvement in the December 3, 2024 illegal martial law.
According to the legal community on the 27th, Park's side filed the appeal with Criminal Division 33 of the Seoul Central District Court the previous day. He is accused of holding a meeting of senior officials at the Ministry of Justice immediately after the martial law was declared, reviewing the dispatch of prosecutors to the Joint Investigation Headquarters of the Martial Law Command, and ordering employees in charge of exit bans to come to work.
The trial court in the first trial found Park guilty of the charges related to insurrection, determining that he recognized that the requirements for the illegal martial law had not been met and that former President Yoon Suk Yeol had tried to forcibly block the National Assembly from functioning. The court ordered Park detained in court and dismissed the indictment on charges of violating the Act on the Prohibition of Solicitation and Graft.
