China News Service, Beijing, September 12 — A global space infrastructure assessment report released during the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services shows that China ranks second among 48 economies, behind only the United States. The report, jointly released by multiple universities and research institutions, assesses the space infrastructure capabilities of each economy based on indicators such as life support systems, launch systems, communication systems, energy systems, as well as laws and regulations and dispute governance mechanisms. The report also pointed out that the United States, China, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and other economies are leading or highly competitive in related capabilities. The report believes that for some time to come, human space activities will still be centered on cislunar space, while space development between Earth and Mars may gradually advance after 2040.
