Skepticism over the HBM replacement theory... AI memory competition continues
Can CXL replace HBM? We examine the core of the AI memory competition. From Samsung zHBM to the HBM market outlook, check out the key points of the AI Infrastructure Summit.
At the AI Infrastructure Summit held in California, USA, discussions continued on whether CXL, the nextgeneration memory interconnect standard, can replace HBM. At the event, it was noted that while CXL can help expand memory capacity, it is difficult for it to replace HBM in terms of the speed required to run AI models.
Officials from OpenAI and Intel explained that the scope of CXL's use is limited, and that HBM still has the advantage in fast data processing between GPUs and memory. As a result of this assessment, the business outlook for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, which currently lead the HBM market, continues to draw attention.
Samsung Electronics also unveiled its development plans for zHBM, a nextgeneration AI memory, and zNANDO, a threedimensional storage solution, at the event. The company stated its goal of improving AI accelerator response speed and power efficiency through zHBM.
